CVP party asks cantonal parliamentarian to stand for election to National Council

When asked why he was standing for election to the National Council in the elections this autumn, cantonal parliamentarian Kurt Balmer of Rotkreuz said he would as the CVP party had asked him to. Furthermore, he feels the more influence the CVP exerts at national level, the better, the party not just ensuring future success, but guaranteeing it.

With so many interests, he found it hard to find three core issues but he mentioned how important it was to promote the traditional centre-right of the population, which is why, for example, the CVP party had launched an initiative to restrict increases in health insurance premiums. Other matters of importance to him at present, and which deserve urgent attention, include old-age pensions and Switzerland’s relationship with the EU. The 57-year-old lawyer is also concerned about the stealthily increasing difficulty of people seeking access to the law, fearing that, if this continues, the system will no longer work for the middle classes.

As to how he saw his chances of being elected, he mentioned how there were opportunities and risks in all elections. “Even if my chances are not so great, there are always surprises when the results are announced, aren’t there?”

As to his qualifications for standing, the Rotkreuz resident mentioned that he had been a member of the cantonal parliament for eight years, contributing actively in this time to various political processes in order to ensure a prosperous Zug. With this, and other experience he brings with him through his professional and personal life, he feels that, if elected, he would continue be able to make an important contribution to the wellbeing of the canton of Zug.
