Choir Night 2021 postponed until 2022

The organising association has decided to take the safer path, and has postponed this large event by one year.

A Chornacht (choir night) like 2018 – with more than 900 singers and an audience of several thousand people wandering through the streets of Zug without any worries – is probably far from conceivable at the moment. On the recommendation of the Chornacht committee, the member choirs of the association have therefore decided to postpone this event, which had been planned for September 2021, and have announced this in a press release.

The next Zug Choir Night will take place on September 10, 2022. The major task of actually planning the programming of the Chornacht actually started for the committee at the beginning of September. 39 choirs from the canton of Zug, more than at the first edition and among them numerous newcomers, had registered to take part. The organisers were very pleased with this positive feedback.

But they also drew attention to the problems: "It seems unrealistic to us that the developments in the fight against the pandemic will lead to solutions quickly enough for a choir night can be held under normal conditions," says President Andreas Wepler in the communication. Choral singing always means closeness, and singing from a distance could simply not be organised for the around 1,000 singers, from a purely logistical viewpoint. In addition, one wants to avoid the public being unable or unwilling to attend the event at all under these conditions.

Difficult rehearsal conditions
Another reason for the postponement is the consideration of the difficult rehearsal conditions for choirs: with the increasing infection numbers, many groups have stopped their rehearsals once again, because they don’t have sufficiently large rooms in which to rehearse while maintain the required social distance. As a result, it would be difficult to even prepare a programme for the choir night.

In any case, the Executive Board and the organisation committee are looking positively into the future, as the President sums up: "We are taking our responsibility and are postponing the event for one year. We are confident that the conditions for carrying out the choir night will become better once again."
