'Bachelor' Alan Wey is looking for depth

"Bachelor" Alan Wey (34) is currently looking for his woman for life on the popular television programme of the same name. We visited his parents' house in Cham.

The home of the incumbent "Bachelor" Alan Wey is right in the centre of Cham. The apartment is large, bright and cosy. The Christmas decorations stand ready on the white sideboard in the living room, draped in restrained colours.

Alan is not yet back from the photo opportunity in Villette Park. Precious time that can be used for a chat with father Josef in the absence of the incumbent "Bachelor".

Like father, like son
"I’m Seppi", he says and offers a coffee. No-one from the media has visited the TV star's home so far. After all, a home is somewhat intimate, and the flood of media inquiries that Switzerland's most sought-after bachelor currently has to deal with both amaze and delight the father.

Isn't it difficult to watch his own son on TV going to bed with different women? You have to know that not how Alan normally is, and so that’s not a problem at all, says the father, and pours himself a glass of water. Seppi Wey apparently has no trouble with his son's media presence. "I was also someone who enjoyed life at a young age," he says, laughing.

Stepmother Antonella joins in and interjects: "That was until he met me more than 30 years ago". The two laugh warmly.

Intelligence in everyday life
The charming style of Alan Wey, which can be seen in all its facets every Monday in the successful show "The Bachelor" on 3+, does not seem to have come by chance. Before the father can continue, Alan appears. He greets us just as kindly and openly as he does with his "ladies" in the show, and sits himself down at the kitchen table.

The show is all about Alan finding "the right one" for life. The programme includes cat fights, challenges and all sorts of scenes in and on the water – ergo, a lot of bare flesh. You can look in vain for depth in this show, but that’s also not the concept. "But depth is important to me," says Alan. How does the 34-year-old insurance agent define this characteristic? "A woman doesn't just have to appeal visually, it's about much more. She needs to know what she wants. She has to have something in her head," he says, adding: "I don't mean education here, but the way she uses her intelligence in everyday life."

This year’s series was filmed in Portugal due to the current Corona situation, and the candidates and Alan had to be tested continually. Whether Alan will eventually find the woman for life (or at least for a few weeks, as previous "Bachelor" contestants have had little luck in this regard) will only become clear at the end of the current season.

Happy childhood in Cham
"I had a great childhood here in Cham," says Alan Wey. "I always played football, met friends in Villette Park, and, even today, I like to go to Zug to buy clothes, for example," he continues, beaming. It’s this laughter that makes him so appealing to the candidates on TV, and also privately.

His father adds: "We used to do a lot together in and around Zug, and we were also in various clubs together." As a rule, the popularity of the respective bachelor decreases after the last broadcast of the season. Alan believes he will be able to deal with this, and sees the show on 3+ rather as more of a springboard: “I could well imagine using my fame less for commercial than for charitable purposes”, he says, and his eyes underline the noble intentions: Alan's faithful puppy-dog eyes even make his boxer Inka envious for a short time.

"For example, I might play football with children from a home. Or show seniors in an old-age residence how to handle a mobile phone." Professionally, he still sees his future in insurance. "I enjoy this, my employer is fully behind me, and I can certainly continue to take on model jobs every now and then." But, at some point, a bachelor will no longer be young. And then it is surely over with the beautiful appearance. Alan counters: "Isn't it the case that men are like wine? They get better and better with age».

The Bachelor, season 9, with Alan Wey, airs in Mondays at 8:15 p.m. on 3+.
