Application to become “Swiss Capital of Culture 2030” withdrawn

According to the city council, Zug will not become the ‘Swiss Capital of Culture 2030’ after all. The city is withdrawing its surprise application.
 

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Zug city council (Stadtrat) decided to withdraw its application to become “Swiss Capital of Culture 2030” (KHS: Kulturhauptstadt Schweiz 2030).

Despite the opportunities that the title would have opened up for the city, the many critical voices and the stance taken by the Grand Municipal Council (GGR: Grossen Gemeinderat) have led to the project being terminated, according to a statement on Tuesday.

The insights gained from the application will be incorporated into the further development of the city's cultural strategy, however.

The city council had submitted the application to become Capital of Culture 2030 without consulting the city parliament, and was sharply criticised for this.
