Police investigate drivers who acted incorrectly
At the accident site, some road users effectively blocked the rescue lane (Rettungsgasse) or attempted to use it to get further ahead in the traffic jam. The motorway police point out that this is prohibited, and the Cantonal Police of Schwyz have received information about the fallible drivers. The investigations are ongoing.

Rettungsgasse: This is how it works
Various new traffic rules came into force on 1 January 2021, including rules regarding the so-call4ed ‘rescue lane’. When driving on motorways, an emergency lane must already be kept clear for emergency vehicles if the traffic is only moving at walking speed. This also applies when no vehicle with flashing blue lights can be seen or heard. In the case of two-lane roads, the emergency lane must be formed between the two lanes, while it is always between the extreme left and the middle lane on three-lane roads.
