40 years after the Chernobyl disaster

The largest civilian nuclear disaster in history occurred exactly 40 years ago last Sunday.
 

A nuclear reactor exploded in Chernobyl, then part of the USSR, but now in Ukraine, and a part of the radioactive cloud reached Switzerland four days later.

The Ukranian Oleksii Breus experienced the disaster first-hand – he was working at the nuclear power plant at the time, at the age of 27. After the catastrophe, he was ordered to return to the control room to operate the last available water pumps to try to cool the reactor. He is the last surviving member of the control room team.

Today, the 67-year-old Ukrainian lives in Zug. He was forced to flee his homeland due to the Russian invasion of his country four years ago. Probably as a result of his ordeal, he now has problems with his thyroid and his heart.

40 years after: Chernobyl still affects our region today.
