A Hymn to the Virgin
A-cappella concert by two Zug choirs, with compositions to "Maria" composed over the last 1,500 years
The praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary has inspired composers of all eras to some of their most beautiful and moving works. Feelings and emotion are thereby expressed, ranging from pious worship, enthusiastic reverence and jubilant praise.
The programme moves from the Gregorian chant "Salve Regina", through compositions from the Medieval (Ave Maria by Arcadelt) and Romantic period (including “Bogoroditse Devo” by Rachmaninov), to the contemporary "To the Mothers in Brazil" by Jars Jansson, “A Hymn to the Virgin” by Benjamin Britten and “Ave Maria” from the Jazz Mass by local composer Martin Völlinger. A particular focus is thereby placed on the contemporary sound creations of our time.
