Adolf Loos – Private rooms
Kunsthaus Zug Saturday, 25 Oct 2025 -Sunday, 15 Feb 2026

“Don’t be afraid of being scolded as oldfashioned. Changes to old ways of constructing things are only allowed when they bring improvement. Otherwise, stay with what’s tried and tested. Because the truth – even if it is hundreds of years old – has a deeper connection to us than any lie that walks beside us”. – Adolf Loos, 1913 The Austrian architect, designer and cultural journalist Adolf Loos (1870–1933) did not see himself as an artist. Instead, he wanted to serve everyday life. So he focused his attention on private homes and embarked on an intensive engagement with human beings and society. Loos designed private rooms, but did not specify every detail in them. He left space in them for life. He was concerned with rigour, reduction, modernity and functionality, but at the same time he did not thrust any overarching design on his clients and paid due consideration to what was familiar and cherished. He adopted a critical stance towards the art nouveau of Vienna, for his work was characterised by a predilection for simple things and noble materials, largely without ornament. This exhibition shows numerous pieces of furniture, clocks and lamps by Loos from the Hummel Collection in Vienna, and places them in a dialogue with works by Gerstl, Kokoschka and Schiele from the collection of the Kunsthaus Zug. Curated by Julius Hummel and Matthias Haldemann
