Twenty-five employees to lose their jobs

Twenty-five employees of the South African company Sappi are to lose their jobs as, since the end of February, the firm is no longer involved in the manufacturing of speciality paper for the former Cham Paper Group, now the Cham Group (CG) and its lease on the latter’s site is due to expire.

As is now widely known, the Cham Group is to concentrate on developing its huge industrial site into a residential and commercial area, hence the lease Sappi Europe had on part of it is to expire in June1919.

It was reported how the management of the Johannesburg-based company had looked at various options including possibilities of remaining in Switzerland, but since Sappi Europe no longer manufactures paper here, it was felt more appropriate to merge its solutions centre, supply chain and customer service operations with one of more of its other European plants.

It was revealed the 25 employees affected have been informed about the re-structuring with the obligatory consultation procedure and social plan about to be set up.
