The Zug Post

The Zug Post goes online today! Those who live in Zug but only speak English often did not know what was going on locally. From today on, that will change.

·        Today The Zug Post goes online!
·        Articles from the Neue Zuger Zeitung will be published in English
·        The idea came from the Young Chamber of Commerce

“The solidarity with the second homeland is strengthened” Natalie Albrecht, Zug4You

It all started with an idea from the Young Chamber of Commerce: A Zug news platform in English. That vision became reality today, The Zug Post goes online. On the Zug Post  homepage,  English speaking people who live and work in the canton, will be informed about current regional events and news from politics, economics, culture and sport. Approximately 5000 English speaking people live in Zug.

“It’s a first”
The News homepage is run by Natalie Albrecht. Natalie already developed the internet platform www.zug4you.ch  which is an English-language website for English-speakers who are new to Zug. The site informs about the canton and daily life. For Marianne Schnarwiler, president of the Young Chamber of Commerce, working together with Natalie Albrecht is an ideal situation for both parties. “We could not operate such a homepage” she says. The Young Chamber of Commerce will accompany the project for a long time “as Götti” (supporter) says Schnarwiler. According to Albrecht, The Zug Post is a novum in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. “Not even Zurich offers local news in English”

” The Canton gave money”
The goal is, however, that the News platform becomes self-supporting - financed by sponsors. Albrecht and Schnarwiler are confident. Larger international companies, which who have learned about the project, were enthusiastic. “It corresponds to a need”, says Albrecht. Some companies had already developed internally a smaller News platform for their English-speaking co-workers. “Now they are happy that it changes into more professional hands.” A financial contribution of 30,000 francs has been granted by the canton.

The Neue Zuger Zeitung supplies the articles
The articles for The Zug Post homepage will in part be translated from the Neue Zuger Zeitung by an American living since 26 years in Switzerland. Additionally, some articles will be researched and written especially for The Zug Post.  The goal is to have the current Neue Zuger Zeitung articles translated and online by nine o'clock in the morning at the latest, Monday through Friday.  “If there are elections or other important issues, we will also cover the weekends”, says Albrecht.

A wish becomes reality
For Albrecht, a long-desired wish becomes reality. Already with the  launching of www.zug4you.ch there was the desire to offer daily local news, but financially this was not possible. It is however of enormous importance to
provide Expats local news in English. “They are just as interested in local happenings as the Zuger themselves”, says Albrecht. For example all the discussions about the new Herti stadium or the Belvedere project drew large interest. However many foreigners - for lack of German knowledge, didn’t really know what was going on. With precise information rumours can be prevented, so Albrecht. “Wrong information often leads to misinterpretations”. An example is the Belvedere issue. Some expats thought that construction was soon to start, having missed out that the vote did not pass.

Newspaper as a Bridge to Culture
Also for Marianne Schnarwiler it is of utmost importance that non-Zuger are informed about the local happening. She also spent some time abroad.  “First I bought a newspaper, in order to know, what was going on” she says. “The Zug Post” is also valuable for those who are in the process of moving to Zug or here on holiday and want to know what’s going on. . “You can put in a word with your co-workers at the Cafeteria”, supplement Albrecht. “And the interest to learn German is promoted” Besides, if you know what’s going on you feel more at home. “The solidarity with the second homeland is strengthened.”
