New chief of police sworn in

As previously reported, Dr Thomas Armbrüster (on the right in the photograph) was appointed chief of police earlier this year and last Friday he was duly sworn in in the presence of his predecessor, Karl Walker (on the left), who is retiring early after 23 years’ service,15 of which as chief of police, and the cantonal director of justice, Beat Villiger.

The cantonal parliament has announced it has appointed Bernadette Zürcher, a lawyer and presenter, to be ombudswoman for the period 2019-2022. She will be taking over from Katharina Landolf, who is retiring.

Zürcher (second photograph) is a specialist in insurance and liability laws; she has her own practice in Zurich but lives in St Gallen. According to the Ombudsman’s Office, the locations of her previous work and home provide the married mother of two with the necessary distance to be able her to carry out her duties in an impartial way.

Her deputy is to be Markus Vanza, secretary to the municipality of Hohenrain in the canton of Lucerne, hence the necessary equal opportunities regulations will be fulfilled.
