Missing Rower named as Beat Aklin

After a break in the search for the missing rower over the weekend, police will continue to look for his body on Monday.

As mentioned in the headline, the identity of the rower has since been revealed. 73-year-old Beat Aklin owned the highly successful butchery by the Zytturm, and was a highly successful oarsman. He went out on the lake in his rowing boat on Thursday 25 October and has not been seen since.

As Stephan Rogger, the head of Zug Transport Police, explained, the search will continue using an underwater camera on loan from the Cantonal Police in Zurich. This has been used to explore as far as 140 metres down, where no divers can reach. Rogger added that, according to the physics of the situation, it could well be that the body rises to the surface temporarily, though when and where this may be cannot be foreseen, of course.

It was the rower’s family who decided to reveal his identity, to prevent any further speculation and to avoid any further misunderstandings, a photograph of him being published, too.

For ten years Aklin served as a member of the greater city council of Zug, representing the FDP party. It is thought he drowned some 130 metres off Walchwil after falling from his boat as a result of a medical condition, though this, of course, is not certain.
