Increased sentences in Baar pub killing
The case of the death of 42-year-old Erwin Keiser, who was killed outside a pub in Baar, was brought before the Zug high court on Tuesday morning.
Three men, who had already been tried by the criminal court, were accused of negligent homicide and assault after being involved in a violent affray during which Keiser was seriously injured. He later died in hospital.
The high court decided to increase the sentences handed out by the criminal court are the original judgment had provoked criticism and brought the judicial system into question.
The main defendant was given an increased custodial sentence of 28 months, of which 22 are suspended, compared with the original two-year suspended sentence. The two others were given custodial sentences of nine and eight months respectively.
The court justified the sentences by saying that all three defendants had contributed to the cause of the fight which ended up with a man dying and all carried a great deal of guilt in the matter. The two other defendants also had previous convictions for assault.
