Fire brigade hard at work

The Zug Volunteer Fire Brigade (FFZ) convened at the Casino on Saturday evening for its 130th annual general meeting, with Chairman Martin Kümmerli looking back on "an intensive year that was very demanding on all FFZ members".

Commandant Markus Pfiffner praised the excellent work of all 174 members (some nine fewer than in 2007, despite 17 new recruits being taken on), citing one particular act where the rescue services came to the aid of a six-year-old boy called Noah who had climbed up a pole and was too afraid to come down. The FFZ managed to rescue the youngster using a crane, and a few days later, as Pfiffner related, "Noah came into the station to give us a drawing as a way of saying thank you. It shows the kind of recognition that the FFZ has among the local population."

Local councillor Andreas Bossard was full of praise for the town's cooperation with the FFZ and called on the cantonal government to provide a greater financial commitment to the fire brigade's bases. Cantonal government member Beat Villiger countered this accusation, saying that "a solution to the problem is well on the way to being found", and adding that "when the FFZ is doing well, it is a sign that the town of Zug is doing well".
