City's director of planning allays fears over state of city's bridges

It is not surprising that, following the recent collapse of the motorway bridge in Genoa, resulting in the loss of 43 lives, people are wondering how safe the bridges here are.

Indeed, as André Wicki, the head of planning in the city, said, “The disaster in Genoa shocked the world and I know the people of Zug will have thought about the safety of the bridges we have here,” as he went on to assure the population that an inspection by an engineering company had started in the spring of this year and was due to be completed in a few weeks’ time. Hence the council is keeping a close eye on them all.

So far, the report has shown that there needs to be no concern about the structural safety of the larger bridges and road bridges in particular, with only minor defects found.

Repair work was needed, however, on five footbridges and one cycle bridge. It was pointed out, too, that, even before this latest inspection, it had been decided to replace the bridge over the River Lorze by the Freimann restaurant in April of 2019.

Furthermore, it had also been agreed with the SBB to replace the bridge over the lines by Hofstrasse.
