Drunk driver who caused accident detained by members of the public

A man who turned out to have been driving with twice the permitted amount of alcohol in his blood and who caused an accident was detained by members of the public prior to the arrival of the police on Wednesday evening.

The 57-year-old man, who was subsequently also found to have been driving while banned, had driven from Aegeristrasse and was on Lüssiweg near the Cantonal School when he veered onto the wrong side of the road. While one driver approaching from the opposite direction was able to take evasive action, another was not, and a sideways-on collision ensued, leading the latter to sustain slight injuries. Even though his car was damaged, the 57-year-old tried to make off, but he was detained by a number of members of the public until the police arrived.
He can now expect to be charged with multiple road-traffic offences.

In a separate incident on Wednesday evening, a 19-year-old man was driving from Unterägeri towards Zug when the driver of an approaching vehicle, a dark estate car, collided sideways-on with him after skidding on the snow-covered surface. Instead of stopping, this latter driver simply continued on his way. The police have since issued an appeal to any witnesses to this incident to call them on 041 728 41 41 without delay.
