Direct bus services to Munich start

The German Flixbus company is now operating direct services to Munich, with onward connections to places such as Vienna and Copenhagen offered, too.

The double-decker service to Munich operates on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, without having to go via Zurich, as the company spokesman explained.

The journey to Munich takes five hours and 15 minutes, with passengers dropped off at the Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof (ZOB) on Hackerbrücke, just 500 metres from the Main Station. Fares start from as little as EUR 19.50 (CHF 23.00) but rise to EUR 36.00 for the Sunday evening service.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Railways) also operates bus services from Zurich to Munich, the lowest price being EUR 19.90.

Of course, it is possible to travel by train from Zurich to Munich, with four direct services a day, each taking five-and-a-half hours, with fares ranging from CHF 84.00 to CHF 116.00. However, at present, and indeed until Monday 13 August, passengers have to change in St Gallen and on one service, yet again in St Margrethen. Then, as a result of electrification of the stretch between Lindau and Geltendorf, the service is currently having to go via Kempten, adding an extra 15 minutes to the journey.

Passengers are advised to check the railway’s website carefully before travelling.

When all work on this Zurich-Munich line is complete, in 2020, then the railway journey is expected to take only three-and-a-half hours.
