Acting to ensure there is somewhere to live

It goes without saying that it is not easy to find accommodation in Zug, and for young people on training courses it is even harder. Fortunately, an advisory centre for parents, young people and children has been helping out by letting out rooms in flat-share-style accommodation.

Indeed, for two years now, the Punkto WG organisation has been providing such accommodation for young people in Baar, with up to nine rooms available there. Now additional rooms in the former School of Domestic Science near the former Cantonal Hospital on Zugerbergstrasse in the city of Zug will mean 16 more young people will be able to benefit.

Patrik Litscher, who is responsible for accommodation at the Punkto WG (WG standing for shared accommodation) is, of course well aware of the problems of finding somewhere to live in Zug. Let it not be forgotten that, as of the 1 December 2017, there were only 148 vacant flats registered in the whole canton. Even if some become available, the rents are very high. In accommodation provided by Punkto WG, the monthly rent is just CHF 829 and includes furniture, ancillary costs and internet connection.

As mentioned, these rooms for young people in training are available to those between the ages of 18 and 30 and one of the conditions is, naturally, the ability to be able to get on with others who live there. This means adhering to the rules of the house, respecting other residents and sharing household duties, which they have to organise themselves. Litscher went on to say that, because of this, they prefer applicants from young people who already have experience in flat-sharing. In addition to this, certain documentation is required, such as that proving they have not been in debt and have no criminal record. It was thought 18 should be the minimum age to avoid risk of conflict more common among younger teenagers; of note is that the accommodation is not supervised. While rooms are furnished, residents can bring their own items of furniture if they want.
