Zug Climate Week about to start

The Zug Climate Week is a joint project between the cantonal planning department and the city's municipal social, environment and safety department. It will feature a week-long programme of films and exhibitions, starting this Friday, based on the theme of "think globally, act locally”. "We particularly want to address young people," said city councillor Andreas Bossard, "after all, it is they who will determine the climate of tomorrow."

The exhibition shows how everyone can make some improvement to the environment in ten concrete ways and the issue is dealt with in a humourous rather than a dictatorial way. "We recognise how difficult it is to change longstanding habits and attitudes," said Astrid Furrer, project leader of the environment department, "but we hope the exhibition and the films will provoke people into thinking more consciously about environment protection." Experts will be on hand to answer any questions and entry to both the exhibition marquee and the cinema is free.

Both the city and the canton are working together to increase people's awareness of protecting the environment with young people being particularly targeted. "Everyone of us can do something to help the environment," said Heinz Tännler, director of planning in the canton. "There is a lot that individual can do."

Tännler pointed out that the canton had already done a lot with regard to environment protection such as the 2008 energy concept which is to be reviewed shortly. He also mentioned the importance to the canton of maintaining a balance between growth and natural resources. "Our city 2050 energy strategy is aiming at a 2000-watt society," added Bossard.
