World Street Hockey Championships hailed a great success

The World Street Hockey Championships, which have been taking place taking place at the Bossard Stadium and on the adjacent Arenaplatz over the past ten days, have been hailed a great success by the organisers, participants, locals and city authorities.

It was thought initially that there might be some 15,000 visitors, so the fact that it attracted 50,000 exceeded all expectations. Indeed Georges Gortsos, the president of the International Street and Ball Hockey Association said it was the best championship event he had ever attended. Echoing his response, the president of the organising committee, Maurus Schönenberger, said he had never imagined this festival and sporting event would have been so successful.

The championships were also the first major event take place on Arenaplatz, after a major concert with Joe Cocker last year was cancelled. Here, too, the organisers were very happy with how it all went. Police spokesman Marcel Schlatter said they only had one complaint about the noise from a nearby resident at 10:17 pm on the final evening.

Speaking in his capacity as member of the board of the Zug West Residents’ Association, Richard Rüegg said many people in the neighbourhood had attended the event and appreciated the way the organisers adhered to all the rules, especially those with regard to time restrictions.

This successful use of Arenaplatz has encouraged Rüegg to consider staging major events there in the future, such as an open-air festival and the setting up a large screen for public viewing of the European Football Championships next summer.

Mayor Dolfi Müller was also delighted with how the event went and the use of Arenaplatz in this way in particular. He now looks forward to it being used in a similar successful ways in the future.
