Work to re-start on branch of Kantonalbank affected by fire

The fire which broke out at the Postplatz branch of the on Thursday 17 July this year provided for some of the most alarming scenes seen in the city this year with plumes of dark smoke drifting over the lake on a warm summer day.

One fireman had to be taken to hospital and two others had to be treated at the scene after as many as 200 of them attended from all over the canton to put out the blaze which continued to smoulder until the next morning. Even ambulance staff from Zurich and Lucerne were in attendance, as well as those from Zug. Fortunately no customers nor staff were in the branch at the time as it was undergoing renovation.

The Zuger Kantonalbank has now announced that, after a drying-out period of several months, it plans to re-start work on the building in December with May 2016 the new date set for completion, though no details of costs have been revealed.

This flagship branch of the Zuger Kantonalbank was designed by renowned architects Alfons Wiederkehr and Leo Hafner in the Fifties and was a listed building as far as the façade was concerned.

To this day, the precise cause of the fire has never been ascertained.
