Winter season almost under way

The winter sports season is almost under way, with eight inches (20 centimetres) of snow falling on the Zugerberg and in the Ägeri Valley on Monday. Snowmen started springing up left, right and centre, and sledges were being dusted off. There is however not yet enough of the white stuff for skiing to be a viable proposition. "We haven't got enough snow to start up the ski-lift yet," said Thomas Wagner, who runs the lift at Nollen in Unterägeri. Wagner estimated that another 8 – 12 inches need to fall for him to start up the lift, which takes skiers up to a height of 750 metres. "There's not enough for people to ski properly – the grass underneath is still wet and it would churn up the earth if people went on it at the moment. We're ready though," he said, and with the steady snowfall overnight and into Tuesday morning, the lift should soon be up and running – albeit three weeks later than last year, when it was first fired up on 3 December.

The same is the case in Raten and Menzingen, even though the ski slopes are much higher. There has been enough snow over the last two days however to ensure that the cross-country tracks will be ready very soon, with the machine going out today (Tuesday) to flatten the snow and mark out the tracks. Downhill skiers will have to be patient however, as the resorts do not have a snow cannon, but they are hopeful of being open as early as tomorrow.

Sattel-Hochstuckli does have a snow cannon and is ready for business as of today, with the Engelstock lift running already and the others being put into service on Wednesday.
