What do foreign tourists like about Zug?

At present it is noticeable that many locals have gone away on holiday. On the other hand a number of tourists have arrived in the city. What is that they like here in particular? A journalist of the Neue Zuger Zeitung went in search to find out.

The first tourist spotted was Robert Bella, a 33-year-old entrepreneur from Kaposvar in south-east Hungary who had come to visit a friend who works in Oberägeri. "Unfortunately I am only here for the day," he explained in almost perfect German. "Then I am going on to Antwerp, visiting friends there, too." And what were his impressions? Did he like Zug? "I do," he said. "I like all the greenery and the lake-side promenade." In fact he then took out his camera and took a photograph of the flags and the swans. Despite the short time he had here, he also went on to see the Metalli Centre, Postplatz and Kolinplatz.

Birgit Rasmussen, a 55-year-old social education worker from Aarhus in Denmark, was spotted looking in the window of a souvenir shop near the Zytturm in the Old Town. She and her husband have rented flat in Walchwil for 12 days and have been going out on day-trips. They explained, also in excellent German, how they had already enjoyed a walk by the lake and tried Swiss beer and chocolate as well as visiting the Reformed Church. What they particularly liked were the aviaries on Landsgemeideplatz, where they took a number of photographs. With Denmark being so flat, it was not surprising they found the mountain scenery most striking.

It was on Bahnhofstrasse where the journalist then came across a couple from Barcelona looking into the window of a shoe shop. Maria Vidal, 60, said how she had been visiting Switzerland for some 30 years and was particularly fond of the mountains and the people. What she particularly liked about Zug was the Old Town, where she and her husband had polished off a cherry cake. "And very delicious it was, too," she said.

Not far off, on Landsgemeindeplatz, the journalist then noticed Liu Xuan taking pictures of the pedalos on the lake. "I particularly enjoy the lake and mountains as well as the buildings in the Old Town," said the 26-year-old, a software developer from Peking. He is here with his wife and three other families in a group. Unfortunately he could only stay for a few hours and had to dash off as his guide was waiting.

It all makes one wonder what they will all tell their friends on returning home.
