Warmest year on record
2011 has been the warmest year in Switzerland since records began in 1864. January to April were incredibly sunny with little rain, while November broke records for low rainfall in the north of the country and for temperatures in the mountains. Overall, the average temperature throughout the year was two degrees higher than the annual average.
The Swiss meteorological office MeteoSchweiz published figures for the year on Tuesday, showing that temperatures in the half of the country north of the Alps were between 1.8 and 2.2 degrees higher than the average from 1961 – 1990. In the Alps themselves it was even warmer, with a difference of 2 – 2.6 degrees, while in the Italian part of Switzerland the difference was 1.6 – 2 degrees.
The first four months of the year were extremely mild, with a temperature of one degree being measured in January on the Jungfraujoch mountain – one of only four times in 150 years that positive temperatures had been recorded there. Spring was the warmest on record, with temperatures of over 25 degrees a regular occurrence south of the Alps in April and Basle also reaching 26 degrees on one occasion.
Rain then fell throughout June, July and the first half of August until summer finally arrived in the second half of the month. Towards the end of the year, November broke records for low rainfall and overall it was also the sunniest autumn in 50 years.
