Voters in Zug clearly reject both initiatives

Both the GastroSuisse "Stop the VAT-discrimination of the hospitality industry" proposal and the popular initiative "for a public health insurance" suffered clear defeats in Canton Zug on Sunday.

71.5 % of Swiss voters nationwide said no to the VAT initiative, with Canton Zug’s no-vote being even higher, at 75.8 %. Only the Canton of Zurich had a higher percentage (76.1 %). The rejection was particularly clear in the municipalities of Hünenberg and Steinhausen, with more than 78 % of No-votes, while Oberägeri showed the most sympathy for the VAT proposal - although only 29% voted Yes.

Canton Zug was also heavily opposed to the uniform health insurance proposal. With a no-vote of almost 78 percent, Zug was well above the Swiss average of 61.9 %. Similarly high No votes were also returned by neighbouring cantons: Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden heavily rejected the proposal.
Although all municipalities rejected from the uniform health insurance proposal, the No-votes has a wider spread than for the VAT initiative A good quarter of the electorate voted for a public health insurance in Zug City, compared to just below 9% in Risch.
