Violinist from Zug to play on instrument once owned by Mozart himself

Zug violinist Esther Hoppe is to perform at the opening concert of the Whitsuntide Music Festival at the newly restored Brunegg Castle in the canton of Argovia by playing works on a violin once owned by Mozart himself.

Indeed it will be the first time ever that a performance on this instrument has been heard in Switzerland. Experts have concluded there is no doubt that it was made in Treviso, just to the north of Venice, by Pietro Antonio dalla Costa in 1764 and was owned and used by Mozart during his time in Vienna. Furthermore, most of its parts are original and it is in excellent condition. It was subsequently acquired by a private individual in south Germany who then gave it to the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg. Two representatives of the foundation are bringing it to Switzerland especially for the festival at Schloss Brunegg, a castle built in the canton of Argovia by the Habsburgs in the 13th century.

Not only is Esther Hoppe performing at this festival which continues for a number of days, along with Jürg Dähler, she is responsible for the artistic production.

The opening concert, which starts at 8 pm tonight, includes works by Michael Haydn, Franz Schubert, David Philip Hefti and, of course, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself.
