Violent storm hits area again

Heavy thunderstorms caused further damage to the Ägeri Valley on Thursday only two weeks after the flooding of 29 June.

In Unterägeri the corrugated iron roof of a joinery in Höfnerstrasse was blown off and many trees were blown over. Damage is estimated at several tens of thousands of francs.

In Morgartenstrasse in Oberägeri a tree fell on to the roof of a house and many trees near the lido were blown over. The main road to Morgarten had to be closed for two hours after a tree fell on it.

Trees were also blown over in Menzingen, Walchwil and Zug and several cellars were flooded.

The storm also caused power cuts in the Brämen, Heiterstalden, Schwanden, Gubel, Schurtannen and Chripfeli areas of Neuheim and Menzingen, though the Wasserwerke Zug utility providers managed to restore power by 5.50 pm and by 7.30  pm in Schurtannen.

Some 50 calls were made to the emergency services between 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm with the municipal fire brigades having to coordinate 30 sorties. The Zug voluntary fire brigade was also called out to pump out cellars, remove branches from Artherstrasse and clear blocked drains.

According to the Swiss Meteorological Office, wind speeds of up to 132 kph were recorded on Lake Ägeri and 30 litres of rain fell in just 10 minutes. Other than the tragic deaths of the two Roche employees in Risch, no other casualties have been reported.
