Urs Hürlimann sworn in as member of cantonal government

Former primary school teacher and police chief Urs Hürlimann of the FDP party was sworn in as the latest member of the cantonal government on Thursday morning. He takes over from Joachim Eder (on the left in the photograph), until now director of the Cantonal Department of Health, who is leaving to take up his seat in the Council of States in the Swiss Parliament in Bern following his success at the elections in October.

In his leaving speech, Eder said on the one hand that he was sad to go but on the other hand he felt a sense of satisfaction and gratitude. He said he had always enjoyed his roles both as a member of the cantonal government and as a member of the cantonal parliament who relished a good debate.

Eder was elected to the cantonal parliament at the age of 31 in 1982 and has been a member of the cantonal government since 2001, serving as its head in 2007 and 2008. Now that he has been elected to the Council of States he will be giving up his duties as a secondary school teacher.

Urs Hürlimann was not elected to his new position but assumes the seat by virtue of having come second in the elections based on the system of proportional representation. He will remain a brigadier in the Swiss Army.

Joining Hürlimann in taking the oath was the new member of the cantonal parliament, Beat Iten of the SP party. A councillor from Unterägeri, he takes up the seat left by the Martin Lehmann of the SP party who died last November.

In swearing an oath, the new members agree to faithfully abide by the constitution and the laws of both the Swiss Confederation and the canton, while at the same time promising to respect and to safeguard the rights and liberties of the people, to promote the honour and the welfare of the canton and indeed to perform all official duties in such a way that they would be prepared to be answerable to God.
