Two women writers from the former Yugoslavia to read from their works

Next Monday evening, 23 October, two women writers from the former Yugoslavia who have benefited from funding from the Landis+Gyr Foundation will be reading from their works prior to the audience having the opportunity to discuss aspects raised with them.

It is through funding from this foundation that authors, translators and visual artists from eastern Europe have the opportunity to spend six months living and working in Zug.

One of those currently benefiting from this is Lejla Kalamujic, who was born in 1980 and comes from Sarajevo in Bosnia. She has written a volume of short stories entitled “My Name is Esteban”, in which she writes, for example, about the search for her mother whom she lost while still young. The book also looks at the authoress’ search for her own identity and examines new forms of society. In 2015 Kalamujic was nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature.

Also reading from her works on this occasion will be Meyral Kureyshi, who was born in Przren in Kosovo in 1983 but who, since the age of ten, has been living in Bern, where she set up the Bern Lyric Workshop. In her first novel, “Elephants in the Garden”, she writes about her leaving her homeland, a moving and tragic tale. The work led her to be nominated for the Swiss Book Prize in 2015.

The evening starts at 8 pm in the Burgbachkeller at number 3 Sankt Oswalds Gasse in the city and will be presented by Katrin Eckert of the Basel Literaturhaus. While the readings will be in German, the ensuing discussion will be in English and German. There is no charge for admission.
