Thursday start for school holidays

Schools in the canton of Zug broke up on Wednesday, two days earlier than in the rest of Switzerland. The canton's educational department sets out school holidays as part of a five-year programme, and for the past six years now, a rule has been in place that states that, while the two-week break should start after school on the final Friday before Christmas, should 24 December fall on a Friday or a Saturday, then schools would break up after lessons on the Wednesday before.

The idea behind this is to avoid too many requests for children to miss the last day or two of school, in particular from expat families who are travelling great distances to go home and spend Christmas with their loved ones. The Wednesday finish thus gives them enough time to travel and still be home for Christmas, and means that all pupils – whether of Swiss or foreign origin – get the same amount of holidays, rather than ex-pat kids having extra days.
