Thirty motorists fined for going through red light

The Zug Police have made it known that up to 30 motorists have been fined for ignoring a red light at road works on the city's Artherstrasse.

This stretch of the road between the Casino and Fridbach is currently open to alternate traffic flow on one side of the road only.

It was observed on Thursday morning how one driver approaching the city even overtook a car correctly waiting at the red light in front and veered onto the side closed to traffic as he did so. As his number was taken he can expect to be hearing from the prosecution service. Hardly a few minutes later four other motorists blatantly ignored the lights at red and continued on their way.

In fact the police have monitored these lights four times over the past ten days and no fewer than 30 motorists have been fined CHF 250 for failing to wait.

"Driving through traffic lights at red just to save a few minutes is not a trivial matter," said a police statement. "Those who do this not only represent a danger to motorists approaching from the opposite direction but also to the men working very close by. Furthermore, any accident on a major road like this where only one side can be used would cause huge traffic problems, bearing in mind all the emergency vehicles which would have to attend."
