Successful public transport exhibition held

Guido Nussbaumer is one of the fortunate people who are able to combine their job with their hobby. Thanks to his efforts and the local Citizens' Community, a successful exhibition about all aspects of local public transport was held in Oberägeri at the end of 2011 and a further one will be held in March.

In 1974, Nussbaumer started his job as a bus driver for the Zug Transport Company (ZVB), the history of which has never ceased to fascinate him. He was fortunate in having the former stationmaster of Unterägeri, Armin Zürcher, to help him find out all about the history of public transport in the canton and not least about the old Electric Zug Tramway (photograph).

Until recently, Zürcher accompanied Nussbaumer on the many talks he gave at schools, old people's homes and other institutions where they were able to enthuse their audiences about the history of the ZVB. In addition, over the years, Nussbaumer has built up a huge collection of old bus and tramway artefacts such as old uniforms, ticket machines and other transport paraphernalia. In fact the collection became so extensive he did not know where to keep it all until the Unterägeri Citizens' Community stepped in to help, providing him with space to open up a temporary museum on Küfergasse in Oberägeri from 1 October until 3 December last year as well as providing space for Nussbaumer's collection at the Chlösterli old people's home.

During the time of the exhibition, the bus driver welcomed visitors for two hours every Saturday, telling them all about public transport in the old days and answering questions. Among the visitors were other local transport enthusiasts from Bern and Zurich as well as the last surviving driver of the trams which used to link Zug with the Ägeri Valley. "I was able to learn a lot from them," said Nussbaumer. "It was wonderful to hear all their old stories and meet other collectors of transport memorabilia like myself. It was nice being on the same wavelength with them all."

While the main exhibition is now over, Nussbaumer is still able to give tours and talk to interested visitors at the Chlösterli home as well as continue his visits to schools. Now a further exhibition is planned for March but for those who cannot wait until then an exhibition of some of Nussbaumer's collection of old postcards of the Ägeri Valley is currently on display in the window of the Citizens' Community at number 1 Küfergasse in Oberägeri.
