Speed limit on Zeughausgasse to remain at 30 kph

The city council announced on Tuesday that the speed limit on picturesque Zeughausgasse in the Old Town is to be kept at 30 kph and that, once its renovation is complete at the end of the year, it will not, after all, be declared a "shared zone", which would have meant a speed limit of 20 kph.

This will come as relief for some of the residents and local traders as they feared a slower speed limit would have led to fewer car parking spaces and hence less business. In fact some of them had even called for the street to be tarmacked rather than be laid with expensive cobblestones imported from the canton of Obwalden. As it is, the laying of cobblestones is already half complete.

Locals will know that the street has been undergoing renovation since July and it is not expected to be completed until December, after a new drainage system has been installed.

There is the possibility that yesterday's decision could be revoked in a few years' time when nearby Postplatz is to be renovated. This means Zeughausgasse could well become a shared zone once this is complete.
