Special youth sport and music courses launched

Some 20 12-13-year-old pupils who show particular promise in sport or music are being given the opportunity to concentrate on their sporting or musical abilities without neglecting their general education.

Previously, school and homework dominated young Simon's life but now he he can start training first thing in the morning. He already plays for Zug 94 and would like to become a professional footballer. It is similar for talented tennis player Sarah, who at 13 is one of the best players in Switzerland, and for Yannick,13, a promising ice-hockey junior with EVZ.

The cantonal art and sport classes are taught in the Kirchbühl 2 School in Cham and are provisionally planned to run for three years. The pupils stick to the same curriculum as other pupils but only have 26 lessons a week instead of 36 so they can spend time training or practising on their musical instruments.

The project requires a great deal of organisation with regard to timetabling to ensure the pupils do not miss out on any essential lessons but they also have the opportunity of individual lessons if necessary.

"This project is a completely new challenge for me," said class tutor Frederic Rüegg, who he feels like more of a coach than a teacher. Both pupils and teachers recognise it is hard work for all concerned but the children themselves are highly motivated.

But what happens if a career on the stage or on the sports field fails to materialise? "Well, I will still have my school leaving certificate," says budding accordionist Julian, "and anyway, I have already released two CDs."
