Scooter rider falls off his vehicle and is hit by passing lorry

A scooter rider had to be flown to hospital after sustaining serious injuries an accident in which he fell off his vehicle and was subsequently hit by a passing lorry on Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after noon on Sihlbruggstrasse in the municipality as the rider was on his way to Neuheim. For reasons yet unknown, the 61-year-old veered onto the wrong side of the road while negotiating a bend at Laubau and was subsequently hit by a lorry being driven correctly in the opposite direction, leading him to sustain serious injuries. As mentioned, he was duly flown to hospital for treatment.

The fire brigade was also summoned to clear the road of fuel which had escaped from the scooter and to prevent a fire which could have been caused by diesel leaking from the lorry.

For some time after the accident, the road between Sihlbrugg and Neuheim had to be closed. While a warning road-closed sign was set up at the Sihlbrugg roundabout, some six motorists ignored it and continued on their way, an offence for which they were subsequently fined.
