SC Cham celebrates centenary in spectacular style
Some 8,000 visitors packed the Hirsgarten ground on Saturday evening to celebrate the centenary of SC Cham.
There were bars, marquees and numerous attractions for everyone including performances by pop stars Ritschi - the former front man of Plüsch - and Marc Sway, with the highlight being the firework display in the evening depicting a gigantic football game, designed by Jean-Marie Chesnais of France. It was almost as if the celebration were the continuation of the memorable 1,150th anniversary of Cham celebrations in 2008.
"People will remember this occasion for years to come," said SC Cham president Urs Scherer, "and I am particularly pleased to be able to say that this season, we have been able to form a junior team, too."
In her opening speech, mayoress of Cham Ursi Luginbühl said that games and sport were an important foundation in life, while Heinz Tännler, head of planning in the canton, said ,"Sport is positive and a good school for life, with the older and stronger helping the younger and weaker," which is why he claims he always supports sport as much as possible in politics.
"Where else do rich and poor, Swiss and foreigners, come together other than in sport?" asked Peter Gilliéron, president of the Swiss football association. "Integration begins with football, when the kids are seven or eight years old."
"As the German coach Otto Rehhagel once said, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you don't win!" said Urs Dickerhof, president of the Swiss home league. "What we must not do," he added, "as the German player Lotharis Matthäus once confusingly said, is put sand in our heads," much to the amusement of the gathered crowd.
