Rival ice-hockey fans cause extensive damage to city pub

As many as fourteen ice-hockey fans were temporarily detained by police on Saturday after damage was caused to the Mr Pickwick Pub (second photograph) on Alpenstrasse prior to the match between EVZ and ZSC Lions of Zurich later that evening.

It was around 6pm that a group of masked fans, presumably supporters of the Zurich club, smashed windows on both the Alpenstrasse and Gotthardstrasse sides as well as on the main door to the pub where rival EVZ fans had gathered. What is more, a smoke flare was thrown into the premises. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.

Following the attack, groups of masked men made off in cars in various directions. Thanks to swift police action, three of the vehicles were subsequently able to be stopped and fourteen men, aged between 17 and 25, were temporarily detained. They can now expect to be charged for their offences and face a ban on attending further matches.

In order to prevent any further such incidents that evening, there was a large police presence around the Bossard Arena, officers subsequently escorting the Zurich fans back to the station.

The match that evening was won by Zug by four goals to one.
