Referendum on extension to Villette Park postponed
As previously reported, a referendum was to have been held on Sunday 11 March as to whether an area of agricultural land adjoining Villette Park known as "Täubmatt" should be used as an extension to it. Now the referendum is to be held 5 weeks later because of a legal technicality.
The date now fixed for the referendum is Sunday 15 April. This is because 8 weeks' notice of the referendum has to be given following the citizens' assembly in December, at which, in an initial vote, 193 people were for the extension as opposed to 167 against.
According to cantonal electoral law, notification of the referendum should have been published in the official gazette on Friday 13 January. However, as a result of continuing discussions, not least about the cost of the land, which was reduced by 10% to CHF3.39 million by the generosity of its owner, it was not possible to announce the full details of the referendum by that date. Hence the new date on the Sunday after Easter.
Readers will remember that many thought the price of the land was too high, whereas others felt that this was a unique opportunity to acquire the land in a move which would be of benefit to all.
