Private schools as popular as ever

A recent report has shown that seven percent of children in Zug go to private school – a figure that is between twice and four times the figure of neighbouring cantons.

There are 12,000 school-age children in the canton, and well over 1,700 of them go to fee-paying establishments such as the International School of Zug (photo). The report – the first of its kind – also revealed an amazing statistic, namely that an incredible 20 percent of children in Walchwil – one in every five pupils – attend private rather than government-run schools.

These figures, due in large part to the number of expatriates in Zug who want their children to be educated at least partly, if not wholly, in English, are way above the levels found in other cantons in the area. In Zurich and Obwalden for example, 3.9 percent of children attend private school, while the figures drop to 2.5% in Schwyz and a mere 1.4% in Lucerne.
