Power-cut from city to Walchwil causes problems

Some 15,000 customers from the city to Walchwil were affected by a power-cut on Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, electricity was able to be restored after an interval of 17 minutes.

It was at 2.15 pm precisely that the power-cut started, with parts of the city of Zug, Oberwil, the Zugerberg, Menzingen and Walchwil affected. Fortunately, the WWZ Energie AG utility company was soon able to restore power.

According to company spokesman Robert Watts, the cause of the problem was able to be traced to a fuse protection device in the Herti district of the city, designed to be activated in order to prevent any major damage to the main infrastructure.

Naturally, some traffic lights were affected too, the police having to take control, for example at the busy Baarerstrasse/ Gotthardstrasse crossroads (main photograph) and outside the Metalli shopping centre (second photograph).

Businesses were affected with shopkeepers unable to use their electrically-powered tills. At the Tobacum tobacco shop on Baarerstrasse, for example, the assistant there had to prise open the till manually to get at the cash. What she was also concerned about was the lottery computers. Fortunately, once supply had been returned, no problems were foreseen before the draw later that evening.

Tills at the Migros checkouts at the Metalli shopping centre were also affected, the areas not as brightly illuminated as they normally are, as can be seen in the third and fourth photographs.

The last time the canton was affected by such a widespread power-cut was in 2013.
