Ombudswoman settles 143 cases over 2013

It has been announced that the ombudswoman was able to settle 143 disputes brought to her attention over the course of 2013. This means that the workload of Katharina Landolf, who holds this office, remained much the same as in the previous year.

Most of the cases she had to deal with involved the Departments of Economic Development and Security. This was no doubt caused by the fact that it is these authorities which deal with matters such as unemployment benefit, disability insurance, policing and  road traffic licensing.

At municipality level, most cases Landolf had to deal with related to social benefit and schools. Just over half the cases, 50.6% in fact, were instigated by men, 36.8% by women, with the others originating from couples, families, companies as well as administrative and governing bodies.

Most of those who sought her assistance were in the 45-54 age-range. What was interesting to note was that the number of foreigners she advised rose from 13.4% to 18% over the course of 2013, though the percentage of foreigners in the canton remains at 25%.

The office of ombudsman was created in 2010 out of the previously named Office of Mediation in Situations of Conflict. This latter authority was set up in 2001 following the Zug Massacre (when 14 parliamentarians were shot dead by a local man bearing a grudge).
