Old books saved from the scrap heap
Every year some 250 tonnes of old books are just thrown away but an organisation in Baar is helping to save some.
In recent years an orange-painted bus run by the waste disposal services of the Zug municipalities has been going around to see what items of rubbish might be re-used. Unfortunately, as a result of the high running costs, the use of this bus, which acted as a kind of travelling library, has had to be stopped.
However, the books are still not being thrown away, but can be found in a new library in Halle 44 at 44 Altgasse in Baar, which has become a haven for lovers of old children's books, famous novels and rare works of literature.
The Association for Work Market Measures has provided the space for the books collected by the Zug waste disposal authority, adding to its already extensive services in helping people who are out of work. Unemployed people can work at the centre for up to six months in the bicycle repair workshop, the laundry or the needlework shop, providing them with regular working hours. They do not actually get paid other than the benefit they receive from the unemployment office but they do get help when applying for jobs. In fact 50% of those helping at the centre get a job within six months.
Now some may help in the library, where books which are considered too good to be thrown away are sorted and housed on the premises. "It would be a shame just to throw the books away, so instead we bring them here and anyone can come along and take one free of charge," said Paul Langenegger, head of the waste disposal service, "After all, not all rubbish is the same."
