He is often described as a skater boy, but that may just be because the 28-year-old Russian does not dress like a throwback from the Soviet Union days. Once Nikolai Tokarev sits down at the piano and starts playing however, outward appearances cease to matter and all that counts is that the great tradition of Russian piano virtuosos lives on in him. Like a latter-day Vladimir Horowitz, Tokarev takes us on a whirlwind tour from Italian Baroque through to the best that contemporary Russian music has to offer, whizzing in and out of the genres like... well, like a skater boy.
