New branch of Aldi opens

For some time now there have been empty shop promises at the Oberdorf Shopping Centre in Baar, especially in the southern part of the complex. However, on the opposite side of Oberdorfstrasse, a new branch of the German Aldi store opened on Thursday.

The new supermarket, which covers an area of 600 square metres, sells primarily food and household goods. As Aldi Suisse itself explained, there are a number of Swiss products on sale including some from the region. What is more, this branch is only one of three stores in central Switzerland to have its own bakery, selling bread, snacks and croissants with chocolate filling for example.

Aldi Suisse went on to say that the central location of these premises was a deciding factor in moving there. What is more, it is easy to reach by bus and car and there are as many as 66 parking spaces available in the underground car park. After the one in Cham, this branch of Aldi is in fact the second one in the canton and the 172nd in Switzerland.

Both the Coop and Denner retailers are also in Oberdorf but are taking the opening of a new competitor in their stride. In fact Paloma Martino, the head of communications at Denner, said that a bit of competition livened up business. Indeed the company is planning to improve its fruit and vegetable sales area and also introduce bread-making ovens.

As for Coop, they are happy with the volume of sales at its Oberdorf branch and are not over concerned that a new Aldi supermarket has opened nearby.

The store at number 9 Oberdorfstrasse is open from 8 am until 7 pm from Monday to Thursday and from 8 am until 8 pm on Fridays. On Saturdays it opens at 7.30 am and closes at 5 pm.
