New appointment for former member of cantonal government
A former member of the cantonal government, Robert Bisig (61), of the CVP party, has been appointed secretary to the Department of Economic Development of the half-canton of Appenzell-Innerrhoden. Bisig (photograph) is currently head of the board of management at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital and will take up his new appointment on Tuesday 1 May, taking over from Markus Hellstern, who is relinquishing his duties.
Bisig was head of the Department of Economic Development of the Canton of Zug for 16 years from 1986 until 2002. Thereafter he became CEO of the Zug Cantonal Hospital, leaving only in 2009 to take up his appointment in Lucerne.
In his new job, in the area where his wife comes from, Bisig will be taking over a large number of areas of responsibility such as the Companies Registry Office, the Public Transport Office, the Employment Office, the Foundation Supervisory Board and the Central Office for the Provision of Land for Economic Use.
With only 15,688, Appenzell-Innerrhoden has the smallest (mainly Catholic) population of all Swiss cantons and along with the other (mainly Protestant) half-canton of Appenzell-Ausserrhoden it is totally surrounded by territory of the canton of St Gallen. As late as 1991, Appenzell-Innerrhoden was the last canton in Switzerland to allow women the right to vote on local issues.
