Municipality receives Gold European Energy Award

Ruedi Zurbrugg, the president of the Cham “Energy-Town Committee” and Markus Baumann, who is responsible for energy, transport and public safety matters on the municipality’s council, were both present at the KKL congress centre in Lucerne on Monday of this week to receive the Gold European Energy Award on behalf of the municipality for the outstanding responsibility it has shown in the way it practises energy-saving, in particular in the area of transport and in such a way limiting deleterious effects on the environment.

The designation “Energy-Town” is awarded both by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy and the “Energy-Town” funding body to such municipalities as Cham, which excel in the way they use energy as sparingly as possible.

Speaking on the occasion of the award ceremony, Baumann mentioned how, 12 years ago, Cham was the first municipality in central Switzerland to receive this gold award for its energy-saving efforts. “Those municipalities achieving this award are among the best in the whole of Europe,” he said with pride.

The designation “Energy City” is conferred when more than 50% of possible measures relating to reducing energy are implemented, with gold status awarded if 75% is achieved. The municipality of Cham has managed to achieve this to the tune of 81%.

The entire population of Cham is invited to celebrate the presentation of this award in the Lorzensaal function room at 7.30 pm on Monday 12 December on the same occasion as a general residents’ meeting.
