Much creativity in evidence on the streets and in Feuerhorn journal

It will not have gone unnoticed by anyone walking through the Old Town yesterday that Fasnacht celebrations in Zug had begun in earnest.

What was evident was how much thought, hard work and time had gone into designing and making all the different and imaginative costumes children wore. In addition to the traditional clown outfits, others were dressed as characters from Star Wars or Arabian Nights. As one onlooker, Silvia Schwerzmann, herself from Zug and a regular spectator of carnival traditions both here and in Lucerne, said, “It amazes me how creative those involved in costume-making are.” Indeed, some youngsters from the Montana Institute even dressed up as jelly-fish.

One special feature of yesterday’s parade was that it saw the 40th anniversary of the (re?) introduction of Cheslette festivities, hence the oversized pink and violet birthday cake. The tradition of Cheslette dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, the loud clanging of bells and rattles meant to drive winter away.

Then, as previously mentioned, a satirical journal, the Feuerhorn, is published every year to coincide with Fasnacht. This 125th edition cost just CHF 8.00, or 0.0008 Bitcoin, its cover page featuring a cartoon of those in the running to take over the city’s mayoralty this year.

As the journalist who wrote this article mentioned, revelations about Zug mentioned in Panama Papers and Paradise Papers pale into insignificance when compared with all that the Firehorn reveals.

For example, reference is made to the forthcoming National Swiss Wresting Tournament to be held in the canton next year, with the idea mooted that the Speck Confisier, in addition to the cannabis sponges it is currently offering, might like to introduce a sawdust variety (sawdust in connection with the arenas on which Swiss Wrestling is performed). This would be a good idea, so thought those behind Feuerhorn, as the enjoyment of both the tournament and the sponges could then be greatly enhanced, as long as there was plenty of beer and water to hand.

Although the canton is having to make cutbacks in administration, journalists at Feuerhorn thought it would be a good idea to set up a Department for Gender Protection in the wake of the “MeToo” sexual misconduct revelations (in the USA), regardless of cost.

Looking to elections in the individual municipalities, questions were asked about how residents of Walchwil might feel if they no longer had a mayor with a surname of one of the dynastic families which have traditionally “reigned” there.

There was also speculation that, in addition to a paper edition of Feuerhorn, an online version was available. When journalists of the Zuger Zeitung phoned up to enquire whether this was the case, no-one was available for comment; everyone was at the Fasnacht celebrations.
