Mould problem on hospital windows
Following the "exploding" windows on the façade of the Cantonal Hospital, the additional sound-proofing which had to be installed by the corridors and the cracks in the kitchen floor, yet another problem has arisen, with mould appearing on some windows in patients' rooms.
"It appears that water has managed to get through some wood-framed windows," said Heinz Tännler, cantonal director of planning. As a result, all such windows are to be carefully examined in September and October. "Care at the hospital has continued uninterrupted and the full costs of the repairs will be borne by the builders under the guarantee," said Tännler, who refused to comment on the number of windows affected.
When asked if it was not embarrassing for such a new building to have so many faults, Tännler said, "In a building of this size, these things can happen. The Kantonspital remains a good hospital and we have everything under control." He denied lower quality windows were used to cut costs.
The Baumgartner company in Hagendorn who made the windows was not available for comment on Tuesday. However, Felix Hegetschweiler of the main building contractor, HRS Real Estate AG of Zurich, said, "clearly the water-bearing coating on the windows was underestimated. The metal profile of the windows on the outside showed a weakness when tested with a crane and pressurised water."
As for the patients, "Most show understanding for the measures we are having to undertake", said hospital director Matthias Winistörfer. "We have not had any complaints so far and the main thing is that routine work in the hospital is not affected."
