Medaxis AG awarded Innovation Prize

The medical technology company Medaxis AG was awarded the Zug Innovation Prize by Matthias Michel, the head of the Cantonal Department of Economic Development, at a ceremony held in the Theater Casino last Friday, in the presence of some 150 experts in economics and science, as well as a number of politicians, on the occasion of the Zug Innovation Day, which, this year, focused on the theme of Digital Health.

The Medaxis AG company of Baar develops and manufactures devices which help in the treatment of wounds, not so much those like grazes resulting from falling off a bicycle, but those which diabetics may suffer from on their feet as a result of poor blood circulation.

In handing over the Zug Innovation Prize to Beat Moser, the CEO of Medaxis AG (on the right in the photograph), Michel said how pleased he was that as many as 24 entries had been received for this year’s competition, significantly more than in previous years. On behalf of the jury, the member of the cantonal government also praised the Medaxis team not only for their development of this device, which makes use of a water microjet technology to clean wounds, but also because its manufacture has led to the creation of seven new jobs, with seven more planned. This aspect is one of the criteria firms competing for the prize have to fulfil, as this means the region benefits, too. Indeed, in this case, extra jobs will be created among external partners, too, for example in those firms supplying Medaxis company with what it needs.

Moser was naturally delighted to receive this prize, worth CHF 20,000, on behalf of his team. He mentioned how the search for the healing of wounds has been an ongoing process since ancient times. As mentioned, this precision equipment his company has developed uses water microjet technology in a so-called debridement process to remove dead tissue, foreign bodies and bacteria from the wound in a virtually painless way, without harming surrounding healthy tissue, too. What is more, it also speeds up the healing process. Explaining it in a more simple way, Moser compared it with high-pressure cleaners such as those used in the house and garden. Bearing in mind the device only weighs five kilogrammes, it is quite light. And as it is the same size as a pressure cooking pot, it is of a manageable size to use, too. Initially, the company is to promote the market for such items in Switzerland before exporting it.

Zug Innovation Day has actually been organised by the Zug Technology Forum for the past 13 years now.
