Man dragged 3 kilometres as arm is trapped in train door

In a nightmare scenario on Tuesday morning, a post worker's arm was trapped in an automatic door of a train which dragged him 3 kilometres to Zug. He sustained serious injuries but is in a stable condition at a specialist clinic.

The incident happened shortly before 12 noon as the Zurich to Lucerne regional train arrived on schedule at Baar Station. A 47- year-old post office employee then approached the luggage van at the rear of the train from platform 2 to unload some parcels. Suddenly, the automatic doors of the van closed, trapping the man by his arm.

The train then set off dragging the shocked worker on the outside of the carriage for the 3 kilometres to Zug Station, where he was able to open the doors and free himself, collapsing on to the lines as he did so. Thanks to alert SBB trackmen, an approaching train was able to be stopped in time.

The victim sustained serious injuries to his legs and buttocks and was taken to hospital immediately before being transferred to a specialist clinic, where doctors described his condition as stable.

At the time of writing the reasons for the accident are not clear but the forensic department of the Zug Police and the Swiss Federal Ministry of Transport are investigating what happened.

The incident caused slight delays, with those passengers on the affected train having to transfer to another one.
